WHAT IS PREDIABETES?
Prediabetes is characterised by the presence of blood glucose levels that are higher than normal but not yet high enough to be classed as diabetes. If undiagnosed or untreated, pre-diabetes puts you at a higher risk for developing type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease. Our Diabetes Clinic in Dubai offers a prediabetes screening package.
PREDIABETES SYMPTOMS
Symptoms of diabetes include:
- Genital itching and/or frequent thrush
- More frequent urination than normal
- Slow healing of wounds
- Blurred vision
- Excessive thirst
- Weight loss
- Fatigue
WHAT ARE THE RISK FACTORS FOR PREDIABETES?
You should be tested for prediabetes if you:
- Have a close relative (parent or sibling) who currently has or has had diabetes
- Have high blood pressure, low HDL (‘good’ cholesterol) or high triglycerides
- Some groups are genetically more prone like South Asians, Afro Caribbean’s
- Have a history of gestational diabetes (women only)
- Are overweight or obese
- Are over the age of 40
TESTING FOR PREDIABETES
The following tests may be used to diagnose prediabetes:
- Fasting plasma glucose test
- HbA1c test hemoglobin blood test
The following results indicate the presence of prediabetes:
- FPG 100 to 125 mg/dL
- HbA1c: 39 to 46 mmol/mol (5.7 to 6.4%)

WHAT SHOULD I DO IF I’VE BEEN DIAGNOSED WITH PREDIABETES?
Lifestyle changes can help reduce your risk of developing full-blown diabetes, including:
WEIGHT LOSS
Lose 5 to 10 percent of your body weight can considerably lower your risk
CONSCIOUS EATING
Choose a diet that is high in fruits, vegetables, and low-fat dairy products and limit your consumption of meats, sweets, and refined carbohydrates. Avoid sugary beverages such as soda and juice.
THYROID DISORDERS
Thyroid disorders are common among individuals with diabetes. Our diabetes center is equipped with the latest technology to diagnose and treat thyroid disorders, including an enlarged thyroid gland and underactive thyroid.
EXERCISE
Get active for at least 30 minutes a day
SMOKING CESSATION:
Quitting smoking helps your body better utilize insulin.
