Alzheimer's Disease

Dementia is a progressive neurodegenerative condition that impairs several brain processes, including memory. The most prevalent form of dementia is Alzheimer’s disease. The exact cause of Alzheimer’s disease is unknown, but an abnormal buildup of amyloid proteins and tau proteins in the brain have been found to cause cell death. Alzheimer’s risk factors include advanced age, a family history of the illness, previous acute head injuries and a range of lifestyle factors linked to cardiovascular disease.

Alzheimer’s disease affects slightly more women than men and is most prevalent in adults over the age of 65. However, approximately one out of every twenty occurrences of Alzheimer’s disease affects persons aged 40 to 65.

Alzheimer’s disease impairs mental function to the point where patients face difficulty in planning and problem solving, decision making, completing familiar tasks, difficulty determining time or place, verbal communication and locating misplaced items.

Valiant Clinic & Hospital’s Neurology Department offers a comprehensive approach to any patient suffering from memory impairment. Treatment begins with composing a detailed medical history, which helps our specialists rule out other pre-existing conditions and arrange for a series of Alzheimer’s diagnostic tests.

Investigations include – but are not limited to – blood tests, urine tests and brain scans, such as computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to identify brain atrophy in addition to strokes, brain tumours and other structural damage that can cause Alzheimer’s disease-like symptoms.

While there is no definitive cure for Alzheimer’s disease, its symptoms can be effectively treated and its progression slowed. Current Alzheimer’s treatment options focus on prevention, addressing underlying issues affiliated with Alzheimer’s such as diabetes and heart disease treatment, cognitive training, and diet and exercise changes.
