SAME-DAY KNEE REPLACEMENT

Simple daily activities such as walking, standing up or going up and down the stairs might become difficult due to arthritis-related knee pain.

When medication and physical therapy fail to restore healthy function, a doctor may propose knee replacement surgery.

However, due to advances in surgical procedures, contemporary technology, and drugs, knee replacement surgery may now be performed as an outpatient procedure, sometimes known as same-day knee replacement.

Outpatient knee replacement surgery is a form of surgery that is meant to keep the whole procedure and hospital stay under 24 hours.

The purpose of knee replacement surgery (either inpatient or outpatient) is to reduce pain, improve mobility, and return you to your regular routine as soon as possible.

The difference between same-day knee replacement and traditional knee replacement is in the pre-op preparation, length of hospital stay, and post-op recovery location. Knee replacement surgery entails removing diseased or damaged cartilage and bone and replacing it with a prosthetic. The injured component of the knee joint is removed during knee replacement, the healthy joint is resurfaced and prepared for the prosthesis or implant, and the prosthesis is finally placed.

The result: a new, disease-free knee joint with less pain and greater function and mobility.

GOOD CANDIDATES FOR SAME DAY KNEE REPLACEMENT

A person with arthritis who requires further treatment is an excellent candidate for same-day knee replacement. He or she should also be in good general health and free of any secondary health issues that could impede the surgeries success rate. Having a support system at home during the recovery period is also an added advantage.

    PRE-OP GUIDELINES

Before scheduling same-day knee replacement surgery, it is important to consult with your surgeon.

This includes checking your BMI and screening you for underlying health concerns such as diabetes and hypertension.

Any underlying medical conditions much be addressed and brought under control before undergoing surgery.

Once your same-day knee replacement surgery is planned, your surgeon will walk you through the operation and answer any concerns you may have.

You and your caregiver will also be taken through what you’ll need to do following the operation, such as exercises and pain management strategies.

You will need to make some temporary adjustments at home during the recovery period, such as creating space for regular physical therapy.

You should also order any needed medical equipment before the procedure to ensure that everything is available when you return home.

    SAME-DAY KNEE SURGERY PROCEDURE

Same-day knee replacement surgery can be performed under general or regional anaesthetic and can take up to two hours to complete. Once the prosthesis is in place, your surgeon will perform a test on your leg by moving and bending it to see its flexibility and movement of the implant. The incision is closed and dressed once the surgeon is satisfied with your knee’s new range of motion.

POST-OP GUIDELINES AFTER SAME-DAY KNEE REPLACEMENT SURGERY

You will be kept in the hospital for a few hours following surgery for observation. Bruising, swelling, numbness, warmth, and pins and needles are common side effects of knee replacement surgery. These symptoms can be great although usually decrease over time that can easily be addressed with physical therapy and medication.

How well the patient adheres to the physical therapy exercises determines his/her length of recovery. After a few weeks, the workouts go from basic bending of the knee to riding a bicycle. In around 4-6 weeks, your mobility will have improved vastly. The recovery time following a same-day partial knee replacement surgery is around 6-8 weeks.
