WHAT IS AN
ENDOSCOPIC SLEEVE GASTROPLASTY?
A relatively recent development in the world of bariatric surgery, the endoscopic sleeve gastroplasty is classified as a minimally invasive surgery that seeks to help patients lose excess weight and increase quality of life whilst minimising the incidence and impact of related health problems.
Endoscopic sleeve gastroplasty involves the insertion of medical device that is capable of suturing the stomach to reduce it's size and therefore the amount of food that can be consumed. As part of the stomach has been reduced, the patient consumes less food and often weight loss results are life-changing.

Why undertake this type of bariatric surgery?

This procedure is recommended if you are overweight and other methods of weight loss such as dieting and exercise have been unsuccessful.
Having this weight loss surgery performed can help to avoid other health conditions such as high blood pressure, heart disease, type 2 diabetes, sleep apnea and arthritis.
Obesity can have much more detrimental side effects and cause health complications in later life.
These risks increase as weight increases and as we age, one way to reduce food intake and control issues such as blood sugar and blood pressure and increase quality of life by reducing excess weight is with a smaller stomach, which is effectively what this operation achieves.
Whilst any surgical operation carries risk, the lack of large incisions means this form of weight loss surgery has certain advantages in terms of minimising the risks of complications whilst achieving the results required in the treatment of obesity and obesity related health issues.

Recent studies have shown that depending on BMI some patients lose approximately 17 kg in the first six months. The following conditions can be improved with Endoscopic sleeve gastroplasty.
Endoscopic sleeve gastroplasty usually does not pose too many risks. Patients tend to experience pain and nausea that can be managed, and disappear after 2-3 days.
PRIOR TO THE BARIATRIC SURGERY
In order to be selected as a valid candidate for the procedure, your doctor might require you to do some lab tests and will also recommend a high-protein and low-carbohydrate diet for some days.
You are not allowed to consume any food or liquid after midnight, on the night before the procedure.
During the surgery
Endoscopic sleeve gastroplasty is a non-invasive procedure that can be done using an endoscope, a flexible tube with a camera, and a suturing device. The procedure involves the following steps:
There will be placed some sutures in your stomach, in order to restructure it into a tube shape, reducing the stomach size.
After the procedure, you will be monitored closely for any complication.
As a result, you will feel full sooner, restricting the number of calories your body absorbs. General anesthesia is required and the whole procedure will take about half an hour.
POST SURGERY
You won't be allowed to eat or drink for about 8 hours after the surgery. After that, you will be put on a liquid diet for two weeks.
Around week four, you will be allowed to consume semi-solid foods, and eventually move into your regular healthy diet.
Most people go home within the same day. It will take about 1-3 days to fully recover at home and return to work.
