Diabetic neuropathy is a common complication of diabetes, both type 1 and type 2. Long-term high blood sugar levels can lead to nerve damage, with symptoms most often appearing gradually and typically starting in the feet.

They may include either sensitivity to touch or a near-total loss of sensation, coordination problems, numbness or pain in the extremities, burning sensations in the feet, muscle weakness, and an increased heart rate.

The four main types of diabetic neuropathy are:

– Peripheral neuropathy:

affects the feet, legs, arms or hands.

– Autonomic neuropathy:

affects the digestive system, sweat glands, sex organs, bladder or cardiovascular system.

– Proximal neuropathy:

affects the hips, buttocks or thighs.

– Focal neuropathy:

Diabetic neuropathy can be managed with the right lifestyle changes and consistent blood sugar management.
