An individual’s Lifestyle refers to their behaviors and functions within their job, day to day activities, and diet. Lifestyle is key to our physical health, mental health and general well-being. According to the WHO, over 60% of related factors affecting individual health and quality of life are correlated to lifestyle.
At Valiant Clinic & Hospital we should encourage our clients to reflect on their day to day lifestyle, because this can be key to creating an environment conducive to healing and rehabilitation.
Here are some of the key areas of lifestyle that we can encourage our clients to alter, which can positively affect physical and mental well health:
- Better Sleep Habits: adequate quality sleep is key for allowing us to replenish energy stores, heal damaged tissues (muscle, nerves etc) and promote further tissue growth. Inadequate sleep will eventually make us slower, weaker, less coordinated and more predisposed to injury.
- Choose the right fuel: a healthy diet provides the body with adequate energy, it also provides essential fluid, macronutrients and micronutrients, which ensure we are able to repair and replenish our systems. These demands vary for each individual and as such we should take time to discover what fuel works better for our own specific machine.
- Move more: Exercise is optional, but movement is essential. Human beings have become more sedentary. In just over 2 generations physical activity levels have dropped in adults by rates of 20-45%. Movement, whether via walking, running, climbing, stretching, is essential for the health and optimal function of all of our key systems including the musculoskeletal, cardiovascular, neurological and circulatory (to name a few).
By allowing our bodies and minds adequate time to recover, by being more mindful of the fuel we consume and by ensuring we move more, all of us can create a lifestyle that is more beneficial to our health .
