Hand & wrist treatments and surgery
Our team is experienced in a wide range of hand, wrist and elbow treatments. We specialize in minimally invasive arthroscopy (keyhole surgery) and other minimally invasive joint replacement and treatment surgeries. Post-surgery rehabilitation includes lifestyle recommendations, follow-up examinations and physiotherapy treatments to help accelerate recovery.
HAND & WRIST CONDITIONS THAT WE DIAGNOSE AND TREAT INCLUDE:
– DUPUYTREN’S CONTRACTURE:
more commonly diagnosed in men than women, this condition is caused by the thickening and tightening of tissues beneath the skin of the fingers and palms. This results in the curling of the fingers towards the palm, which impedes a patient’s ability to hold large objects or put their hand in their pocket. Surgery involves dividing or removing the thick bands to improve finger movement range.
–
FRACTURES:including all distal radius fractures (affecting the forearm near the wrist); scaphoid fracture (below the thumb); thumb fracture; finger fractures.
– GANGLIONS: innocuous fluid-filled cysts that develop in the joints of the hand(often on the back of the wrist). They vary in size and do not always require treatment. However, if required, the ganglion can be removed by arthroscopy (keyhole surgery), with a recovery time of two to four weeks.
– KIENBÖCK’S DISEASE: caused by a shortage of blood flow to the lunate, a tiny bone in the wrist. This can result in bone death (osteonecrosis) causing discomfort, stiffness, and arthritis.
NERVE INJURIES including:
– CARPAL TUNNEL SYNDROME (CTS) is characterized by pressure on a nerve in your wrist. It causes tingling, numbness and pain in your hand and fingers. A nerve known as the median nerve passes through the tunnel from the forearm to the hand and controls sensation in the thumb, index finger, middle finger and ring finger and muscles in the base of the thumb. Tendons also pass through the tunnel. CTS is very common for both athletes and professionals who spend long hours working in front of a screen. You can often treat it yourself, but it can take months to fully heal without professional medical intervention.
– CUBITAL TUNNEL SYNDROME: occurs due to ulnar nerve compression. This nerve travels from the shoulder to the hand, passing through a small tunnel on the elbow (the cubital tunnel). Nerve blockage causes tingling in the little finger and half of the ring finger.
– ULNAR TUNNEL SYNDROME: occurs when a nerve running from the neck to the hand is compressed, often due to a wrist joint ganglion. This causes numbness in the little finger along with weakness and pain.
– OSTEOARTHRITIS: characterized by pain and irritation of cartilage in the joints of the hand. This can limit movement and also affect the base of the thumb and the wrist in some cases.
– LIGAMENT INJURIES: sprains in the thumb and wrist.
– TENDON INJURIES: flexor tendon injury; Boutonniere deformity; trigger finger/thumb and De Quervain’s tendinosis.
– ELBOW CONDITIONS A range of complex elbow conditions treatments are available at Valiant Clinic & Hospital, including elbow stiffness and instability, elbow joint deterioration and more.
