The spine is the central support structure for the human body, if you stop and think about the role the spine plays you will realise that is keeps each part of the musculoskeletal structure connected, it plays a critical part of health and wellbeing.

Back pain and spinal cord issues often start with something as simple as a twinge of pain when lifting an object or bending over, and can range to patients who are suffering excruciating back pain.

Life in Dubai tends to make a more sedentary lifestyle more common, and whilst each patient is unique, we find commonalities in risk factors that can help exacerbate spinal issues and pain.

NEUROSURGERY AND ORTHOPEDIC SPINE SURGERY

Understanding the differences between orthopedic surgeons and neurosurgeons who specialize in spine surgery is important when seeking the best possible care for spinal conditions. While both specialties are capable of treating common spinal conditions such as disc herniations, spinal stenosis, and fractures, they differ in terms of their training and expertise. Orthopedic spine specialists are primarily responsible for treating spinal deformities, including scoliosis, in both pediatric and adult patients. Neurosurgeons, on the other hand, are trained to perform procedures inside the lining of the spinal canal, making them better equipped to handle more complex diagnoses such as spinal cord tumors, arachnoid cysts, and syringomyelia.

The potential treatments for the back and spinal issues that we diagnose can range from palliative and holistic options such as physiotherapy and strength building exercises for muscles in the back to more drastic solutions such as complex minimally invasive surgical procedures.

Spinal Surgery Experts

The best placed authority to determine the treatment required is a spinal specialist surgeon with decades of experience in treating complex spinal, lumbar, neck and brain issues that range from disorders, tumors to herniated discs and everything in between.

We treat a wide range of spinal problems through conservative therapies such as pain management and physiotherapy-rehabilitation, as well as the most advanced surgical techniques when necessary.

Herniated Disc

The spine is one of the most important parts of the body, when you discuss it or hear it being discussed among physiotherapists, chiropractors, spinal surgeon or doctors you will hear reference to the to five distinct sections, each of which is effectively made up of a column of vertebrae, which appear disc shaped, and are either fused or separated by a thin layer of what is called intravertebral fibrocartilage or vertebral discs, which are likened to a jelly donut, with tougher material on the outside protecting a softer core.

The Outer Layer

When the outer layer of these discs degenerates, there is nothing left holding the soft part in place, which makes it slip out, which is what we know as a herniated disc. This can cause significant pain if it impinges on a nerve, even going so far as to cause numbness or lack of feeling in a limb or extremity in some cases.

Herniation

The herniation of the disc can be caused by a multitude of factors, the most common one being general wear and tear caused by increasingly sedentary lifestyles. As we grow older the vertebral discs in the back become more injury prone and brittle, it is crucial to maintain a healthy and active lifestyle, paying particular attention to the exercises that target the stabilizing and muscles that support the spine.

If these are ignored, then a simple act of lifting some heavy shopping bags with your back instead of your legs can be the straw that breaks the camels back. Sports and weight lifting are also two common causes that we see frequently,

  • Other Disc Diseases & Degenerative Disc

Diseases which impact the cervical, Thoracolumbar, sacral and coccygeal region. This leads to pain in the neck, arms, mid and lower back and leg (sciatic pain), and “tail-bone” (coccyx) pain.

  • SPINAL INFECTIONS

Spinal infection is a rare condition in which bacteria, fungi or viral infections affect the spinal tissues, usually carried from other parts of the body.

  • SPINAL STENOSIS

Spiral stenosis is a more common condition in which the small spinal canal (which contains the nerve roots and spinal cord) becomes compressed.

  • SPINAL DEFORMITY

Spinal deformities come in many shapes and forms, including scoliosis and hyperkyphosis and spinal malformations.

  • SPINAL TRAUMA TUMOURS & CYSTS

Spinal trauma includes conditions like fractures, instability, dislocations, whilst tumours and cysts can form for a variety of reasons.
